“Yielding to Jesus will break every form of slavery in a human life.” – Oswald Chambers
Lord, I wonder what kind of man my son will someday become. He has plenty of things going for him, this tiny man-in-the-making; a proud heritage weighs heavily on his side. But likewise, the closets of his ancestors are full, the hinges loose and the doors liable to spill out all sorts of spiritual maladies: addictions, abuse, suicide, bigotry. They echo through the corridor of his history, and it keeps a parent on their knees.
I pray for this boy, that he will overcome the sins of the past, the ones that some say are generational, and I believe that if God is for him, then who, or what –ism, can be against him? But I confess sometimes I lose heart and think it will take a miracle.
But Jesus says:
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free (Luke 4:18).
So instead of praying for a miracle, I pray for faith for my son. I pray someday soon he will hear the Good News and believe it, that he will open up the door of his heart and invite you, the only one capable of healing it, inside. And when he does, when my boy accepts the chain-breaking, freedom-bringing gift of your redemption, I believe that you who made human genes can transform his.
Praying Off the Page: How are you pointing your children to the Savior? Don’t assume Sunday school classes or children’s Bible clubs will give your children all the truth they’ll ever need. Instead, take advantage of the many daily opportunities you have to talk about Christ. Give your children your undivided attention when they ask faith-related questions and don’t be afraid to admit your own doubts and struggles. They’ll be more apt to know they need a Savior when they see their parents depending on Him for their own sanctification. A great book to read with your kids is the Jesus Storybook Bible. And to hear a worship song about the power Jesus has to break every chain, listen to Jesus Culture’s Break Every Chain.
